Sade Sati Calculator

When is Saturn's 7.5-year transit over your Moon?

:

Moon moves ~13°/day, so birth time matters for the natal Moon rashi. Without it we default to noon IST.

What is Shani Sade Sati?

Sade Sati (Hindi: साढ़े साती, "seven-and-a-half") is the 7.5-year period when the planet Saturn (Shani) transits three consecutive rashis surrounding your natal Moon — the 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses from your Moon sign. Saturn takes about 2.5 years to cross each rashi, so the full transit lasts roughly 7.5 years and recurs every ~29.5 years (Saturn's sidereal period).

The three phases

  • Phase 1 — Aroha / Rising: Saturn in the 12th house from Moon. Themes: losses, separation, sleep issues, inner questioning.
  • Phase 2 — Janma / Peak: Saturn on top of natal Moon. Themes: direct pressure on mind and body, family responsibilities, health attention. Often considered the most intense.
  • Phase 3 — Avaroha / Setting: Saturn in the 2nd house from Moon. Themes: financial pressure, speech and family matters, but a sense of emerging from the worst.

Dhaiya — Saturn's 2.5-year sub-periods

Between Sade Sati cycles, Saturn passes through the 4th and 8th houses from your natal Moon — each a 2.5-year "Dhaiya":

  • Kantaka Shani / Ardh-Ashtami — Saturn in 4th house. Pressure on home, mother, peace.
  • Ashtam Shani — Saturn in 8th house. Sudden disruptions, transformations, longevity.

Is Sade Sati always bad?

No. Saturn is the karma-dispenser — it rewards discipline, hard work, ethical conduct, and patience. Many of the most successful people in Indian public life have done their best work during Sade Sati. The transit demands you grow up, take responsibility, and stop running from hard truths. Difficult ≠ harmful. The pressure forges strength.

How accurate is this calculator?

Saturn positions are computed with VSOP87 planetary theory (the same precision Swiss Ephemeris uses), then converted to sidereal with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. Phase boundary dates are found by binary search and accurate to within ±1 day. For your natal Moon, an exact birth time gives the most accurate result — without it we default to noon IST.

Classical text references

Sade Sati is grounded in classical Jyotish through the broader doctrine of Shani Gochar (Saturn transit effects). The key references:

  • Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Maharishi Parashara, ~6th c.) — Chapter on Gochar Phala (transit results) describes Saturn's effects from each house relative to the natal Moon, the foundation of all Sade Sati analysis.
  • Phaladeepika (Mantreshwar, 14th c.) — Chapter 26 on Gochar gives planet-by-planet, house-by-house transit results. Saturn in 12th, 1st, and 2nd from Moon are listed with specific predicted effects.
  • Saravali (Kalyana Varma, 9th c.) — Earlier authoritative source on Saturn placement effects, including the Janma rashi reference.
  • Hora Sara (Prithuyasas, 8th c.) — Detailed Saturn transit chapter, source for many traditional Sade Sati remedy prescriptions.

The term "Sade Sati" itself is a Hindi/popular formulation. Classical Sanskrit texts describe it as the period of Shani Janma-rashi transit (शनि जन्म राशि गोचर). The math is identical.

Phase-by-phase practical guide

Each of the three Sade Sati phases lasts ~2.5 years and emphasises different life-areas. Knowing the phase helps you respond consciously rather than reactively.

Phase 1 · Aroha / Rising (12th from Moon)

Themes: Loss, separation, isolation, hidden enemies, hospital/foreign matters, sleep issues, spiritual awakening. Often the most disorienting phase because you don't know it has begun.

What to do: Take it slow on new commitments. Conserve resources financially. Begin a spiritual practice if you haven't — japa, fasting, or temple visits. This is the phase where many people begin Hanuman Chalisa as a daily discipline.

Phase 2 · Janma / Peak (Saturn on natal Moon)

Themes: Direct pressure on mind, body, family. Health attention especially for bones, joints, teeth, chronic conditions. Family responsibility often falls on you. Emotional weight increases.

What to do: Prioritise sleep and physical health — this is not the phase to push to exhaustion. Establish daily routines (Saturn loves discipline). Accept responsibility rather than running from it. Many natives credit this phase for forging the resilience that carries them through life.

Phase 3 · Avaroha / Setting (2nd from Moon)

Themes: Financial pressure, speech and family matters, accumulated wealth tested. Sense of emerging from the storm but final tests remain.

What to do: Be careful with speech — Saturn in 2nd amplifies the karmic weight of what you say. Avoid major financial commitments in the final 6 months of this phase. The end of Sade Sati often brings sudden positive changes that vindicate the years of effort.

Common questions during Sade Sati

"Should I get married during Sade Sati?"

Yes, generally fine — particularly during Phase 1 or end of Phase 3. The middle Janma phase (Saturn over natal Moon) is traditionally avoided for weddings if possible, but the same-Sade-Sati partner finds each other often during these years. A skilled Muhurat astrologer can find auspicious windows even within Sade Sati.

"Should I change jobs during Sade Sati?"

Depends on the phase and your Saturn placement. In general: Phase 1 changes often lead to harder roads. Phase 2 changes that force you into more responsibility (even reluctantly) tend to pay off. Phase 3 changes can be excellent if you're moving from a Sade-Sati-strained role to something that aligns with your evolved self. Never change jobs in reaction to short-term frustration during Sade Sati — Saturn rewards endurance.

"Is buying property bad during Sade Sati?"

Generally avoid major property purchases during Phase 1 (12th house = expenses/losses) and the second half of Phase 2. Phase 3 property decisions can work well, especially if you're consolidating rather than expanding. Always have a Muhurat checked for the registration date.

"How do I survive Sade Sati?"

The answer most Indian elders give: do your work, stay disciplined, don't cheat anyone, and chant Hanuman Chalisa. The classical Vedic prescription is the same — Saturn rewards integrity. Add Saturday fasts, Shani Mantra, donations on Saturdays. But fundamentally Sade Sati asks you to grow up — there is no "hack" that bypasses that.

"Will I have problems with my parents during Sade Sati?"

Phase 1 sometimes brings the loss of an elder, particularly if they're in advanced age. Phase 2 often shifts caregiving responsibility onto you. This is normal Saturn behaviour — it forces generational role transitions. Many natives find their relationship with their parents deepens through Sade Sati, even when it's difficult.

Preparing for Sade Sati — checklist

If Sade Sati is approaching (within 6-12 months), here's what to prepare:

  1. Health check-up — full bloodwork, dental, bone density if over 40. Saturn finds weak points.
  2. Emergency fund — 6+ months of expenses saved. Unexpected demands often arise.
  3. Begin a discipline now — daily meditation, exercise, prayer, fasting. Saturn rewards what's already in place.
  4. Clear pending matters — long-delayed paperwork, unresolved relationships, unfinished commitments. Saturn forces closure of what you've avoided.
  5. Strengthen family bonds — particularly with elders. Phase 1 sometimes brings their absence.
  6. Visit Shani temple before Phase 1 begins — Shani Shingnapur (Maharashtra), Tirunallar (Tamil Nadu), or any local Navagraha shrine. A traditional pre-Sade-Sati Shani Shanti puja.
  7. Consult a Pandit — get your specific Saturn placement evaluated. Whether Saturn is strong or weak in your chart changes everything about how Sade Sati will treat you.

Common misconceptions about Sade Sati

"Sade Sati always brings disasters."

False. Saturn is karma's accountant, not destiny's executioner. For those with strong, well-placed Saturn, Sade Sati can be a peak career-building period. Many CEOs, judges, and senior public servants did their most important work during Sade Sati.

"Wear Blue Sapphire to fix Sade Sati."

Dangerous over-simplification. Blue Sapphire (Neelam) is Saturn's gemstone but it amplifies Saturn — for better or worse. If your natal Saturn is afflicted, Neelam can worsen problems. ALWAYS do a 3-day trial under your pillow before wearing, and only after a qualified Pandit confirms.

"Sade Sati lasts exactly 7.5 years for everyone."

Slightly different. Saturn's sidereal motion isn't perfectly uniform, and retrograde periods can stretch the transit slightly. Most Sade Satis are 7.2-7.8 years. The calculator above gives your exact start and end dates.

"Everyone has three Sade Satis in a lifetime."

True, with caveats. Saturn's 29.5-year cycle means three Sade Satis fit within a typical lifespan (around ages 0-7, 29-37, 58-66 depending on your natal Moon). The first usually happens in childhood (and is felt by the family more than by the child). The second around career-building years is the most discussed. The third in late middle age tests accumulated wisdom.

"Kantaka Shani is worse than Sade Sati."

Tradition-specific. Some lineages (particularly Maharashtrian) consider Saturn in the 4th from Moon (Kantaka Shani / Ardh-Ashtami) as severe as full Sade Sati for matters related to home, mother, and peace of mind. North Indian tradition usually treats it as lighter. Both are 2.5-year sub-periods worth tracking.
