About this stotra

This is the most well-known Saraswati Stuti, recited daily in Hindu schools (gurukulas, paathshalas) and at the start of any artistic or scholastic endeavour. The verse describes Devi Saraswati as pure white like jasmine, the moon, snow, and a pearl necklace — the embodiment of pure intellect untouched by any darkness. Recited especially on Basant Panchami (Saraswati Puja), Vidyarambham, and on the first day of school each year.

Benefits of recitation

  • Blessings for academic success and learning
  • Removal of mental sloth and confusion
  • Cultivation of pure intellect (shuddha buddhi)
  • Excellence in arts, music, and speech
  • Auspicious for any new beginning of study

English meaning

She who is white as jasmine, the moon, snow, and a string of pearls — clad in a pure white garment; whose hand is graced by the noble veena; who is seated upon a white lotus; who is forever worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and the host of gods — may that Goddess Saraswati protect me and dispel every trace of dullness.
