About this stotra

Karāgre Vasate Lakṣmīḥ is one of the most universally taught Hindu prayers, recited as the very first act after waking up. The devotee, while still in bed, looks at their open palms and chants this verse — invoking Goddess Lakshmi at the fingertips (where action begins), Goddess Saraswati at the middle of the palm (where speech and learning reside), and Govinda (Vishnu) at the base of the palm (the foundation). Then, before stepping foot on the earth, a second verse asks Bhumi Devi (Mother Earth) for forgiveness for the touch of feet.

Benefits of recitation

  • Auspicious start to the day
  • Invocation of Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Vishnu blessings
  • Cultivation of gratitude and mindful waking
  • Suitable for daily practice by everyone — children to elders
